I had an interesting time this weekend at a local pond. The water was low and clear. As I rigged up I could see bass charging into the shoreline and showers of small fry frantically fleeing from them. The action was steady, but erratic. First here, then there. I stalked the bass from about 40 feet from the edge of the pond to keep from spooking them. The fish were crusing a long wide shelf in crystal clear water about a foot deep. I tied on a long leader -about 10 feet- and a size 6 white wooly bugger to match the fry. Seeing two bass about five feet from shore I made a cast of about fifty feet with only the leader over the water. One turned on the fly as I began stripping it and took it without hesitation. The action continued all morning as I walked from one side of the pond to the other sight fishing to feeding bass in clear water.
