Best Smokey Mountain Flies
Could anyone suggest a few flies that work well in the Smokies. I am planning on taking my younger son on his first trip. Thanks

Hares Ear Nymph, BHPT Nymph, Prince Nymph for droppers. Dries I would go with a BWO or an Orange Neversink (easy to see in high water). Also, I (and others) have found a black zebra midge to be effective. You may want to bring an olive zebra midge as well. Most that I know go with a hares ear as a dropper though.

An October Caddis or stimulator in same color...any EHC....parachute Adams....thunderhead or royal wulff....any of the aforementioned nymphs....if water is still high might want to have a wooly bugger or two

If you're heading over there in the next few days, your best bet will be nymphs and big streamers. With the high water, the ugly the fly, the better. Stonefly nymphs in #8-10 will catch fish along with Copper Johns, Pheasant Tail Nymphs and even Green Weenies in #10-14 "ish" and Tellico Nymphs. Woolly Buggers, Sculpin patterns, Matukas, Zoo Cougars, etc are all taking fish as well.
When the water is back down, dries mentioned by the other guys will catch 'em.
What stream(s) are you guys planning on fishing?

I have fished in and close around the town of Cherokee since 1992. I have settled on three sizes, #8, #10, and #12, 3XL, and three colors of my version of a stonefly and a mayfly nymph. I also have a #10, 3XL, crayfish pattern. At least one of these have produced, for me, no matter what time of year or water level.
In July and August, I have had good, not great, success with a black ant, a tan hopper, and an inchworm.
I especially like the upper Ravens Fork, Soco Creek, and Bunches Creek.

smoky mtn flies
in the little river, i and others have seen dark gray/black stonefly action. sixe 12 to 14 with a copper bead head seems to work best on the bottom of the tippet with one of the fine nymphs that others have listed placed above it. i use a small strike indicator..also, we looked for sun on the water...best of luck....dooclimber. oh, you also might need a small split shot between the two flies....
