Fished a blue line in western NC Saturday and did excellent. Got a late start around 11:00 and fished until 2:00. Worked pocket water and one large pool. Large considering most of the water was ankle deep.
Only used one type of fly, #18 EHC. Lost several flies to the trees looking for the squirrels fish, but never did find him. Tight casting to say the least and strong winds made the day interesting.
The trailhead started downstream and several hikers were splashing their way upstream so I had to fish down stream. No trail downstream and with cover heavy I had to fish my way through the stream. Gave me chance to learn how to cast with slack in the line fishing dry flies downstream.
I put together a video of a few fish. Fishing and videoing at the same time is not a talent I possess. The fish were released ASAP and the video is not good, but is all I have.
that was a sweet video... it sure is hard to video and fish at the same time. I really enjoyed the shot where the camera was sitting stationary upstream of that little run and you got a fish to take on the tail end.
Great vid, flynut! Lord, I love chasing feisty little blue-line trout in a crystalline pure mountain stream more than anything, long overdue to hit one myself. Lots of exposed streambed rocks the last couple of years, no?
Glad you were able to enjoy my trip with me. Sure had fun chasing a few fish. Not seen on the video are a few fish in the 7” range. Seven inches does not seen like a lot until you fish an ankle deep stream and are able to get lucky enough to see one that size.
This stream is one that I will only fish twice a year. There are no secret streams anymore and everyone should use restraint in applying too much pressure. After fighting crowds the last few trips to the D, it was nice to go somewhere else and be alone to fish.
No hatcam, but that does sound like a good idea. I was holding the camera in my left hand, rod in right and retreating line with my mouth. A sight to be seen.
