Casting practice area

I set up a place to grass cast at the main part of the farm. There's a old garden patch that we stopped using and it is big enouh to layout flags sort of like the FFF Master test describes for accuracy and distance. I even optimistcally put a flag at 100' I have 35, 45, 55, and 85' flags. Strech a tape out over the 100'.

Testing it I can tell by the tape I'm not as good at distance as I thought (70').

Is this over board? Where do you all practice when not on the stream?

Brad, I practice in the back yard. I have a long stretch from the side yard across the back that allows a good bit of room. My biggest problem is that I have some trees that limit my back cast area. I've adjusted my standing location for optimal distance, so I have about 40 feet for the back cast, and 80+ feet in front of me. That said, casting 65 to 70 feet (shooting 20 to 30 feet of line) seems to be my limit as well.

I'd love to have a good practice area....but the pond is surrounded with trees and brush...and our yard is rough grass and sand...it would do a flyline in pretty quick.....I've been thinking of asking the guys at the golf course if we can practise in a large area away from the course....they have much nicer grass . I'd really like to spend some time with LadyO and my oldest daughter practicing.

Brad:
I did the same thing using the FFF rules, in my back yard, luck has it that my neighbor has a clear yard that allows for my back cast.
I made up a distance guide using two small dowels about 16 inches high and 6 feet of colored string between them. Stuck them in the ground so the string is about a foot off the ground so I could see the line over the string. I put this at the maximum distance that I could cast at the time. Then I started working on my hauling and timing, that's why I still turn and look at my back cast sometimes just to make sure I am letting it go all the way back and not leaving any slack before I start my forward cast. When you get consistent at that distance move it back about five feet and work on that distance. The further you go out the less I move the target back, at a certain point you seem to struggle to make another foot.
Good luck.
