I realize this post is a month old, and this is my first post on the board, but it sounds like you had a great day last month.

I'll be fishing the Clinch this coming weekend for the first time and was hoping someone had a recent report. I've got what I believe are the correct flies/nymphs/midges for the trip. Based on my Googling of the Clinch, it seems like 18-22 is the predominant size of flies they like up there.

Thanks!

Scott

Scott,

#18-22 zebra and blood midges fished on 12' 6X fluoro leaders will keep your rod bent. Your biggest challenge may be the TVA generation schedule though. Good luck.

Thank you, Travis!! I've got the zebra midges covered but don't have the blood midges. I fish a 5 wt rod and will have plenty of 5x and 6x tippet. I have a 5 1/2 furled leader. Will 6 ft of tippet be sufficient on the end of that leader or do I need 17 1/2 ft (5 1/2 ft leader + 12 ft tippet) total?

Is it better with a dry fly indicator (link a klinkhammer or something similar) or something like a thingamabobber and no dry fly?

Thanks!

Scott, IMO, it all depends on where you fish.

If you fish the weir pool, try using little to no indicator. Thingamabobbers make a big splash and the fish don't like it in the calm water. Maybe try some yarn.

Below the weir, try whatever you like and you should have success. I have been throwing streamers lately, trying to stay away from the fingerlings.

More excellent advice, GK! It appears we will be floating and fishing from the Peach Orchard access to the Hwy 61 bridge by the prison. I presume there are some places we can actually get out and fish some holes on that section. While things can change, the generation for Saturday doesn't look like they'll crank up until mid afternoon or later.

I've got a decent selection of streamers that I plan to take along. I'm still new to all of this but my fly selections are coming along....I just don't have everything yet.
