Dan River

Wolly, DD, Nefly....any FF the Dan? I was talking to a cranker that said they heavily stock this river. Again, since it is close to Raleigh for the drive, wanted to see if any had been there. Quercus I bet has been there since...he hits them all!
Thanks in advance,
Flyer

Re: Dan River

The Dan is heavily stocked in the river below the power house at Kibler Valley. Between the two dams above the power house is a special regs section ( prepare for a moderate hike)and you must get a daily permit to fish the special regs section(free of charge) which is available at the power house or from the Dept of Public Utilities for the City of Danville.

Re: Dan River

Its my understanding that the area is closed. The construction going on replacing some of the penstock has caused some damage to the river in the gorge. In the past it was some fine water but was full of snakes ---broken glass--and holes you can break an ankle in ;)I too would like an update on the area. Be safe

guess I should have said above the power house

Re: Dan River

Flyer, according to Kevin Hining, the NC Hatchery Supported section from the Va line south a ways is one of the more heavily stocked HS streams in the region.

You should find some good fishing there.

Re: Dan River

The Special Reg Section is Closed until they get all of the generators rebuilt. The put a new pipeline in, flew it in with helicopters and are overhauling all three generators. When I was up there last month they had one finished and expect the other two to be repaired by the end of July. At that time there was 2 feet of water coming over the top of the dam! Guess that will keep the beavers busy! There is a section of the old wooden pipeline on display. *:o

Re: Dan River

When I fished it in the winter it was having a lot of problems. One of the developers....Primeland I believe, was introducing all kinds of silt etc... into the stream. The fishing was dismal. OTS knows the whole story and you may want to shoot him an IM.

Re: Dan River

I used to fish the Dan occasionally but can't bring myself to go back and see how messed up it might be. I've heard similar reports to Shanktrout's regarding the silt being pumped into the system by Primland from their newly built golf course and/or road building. Looks like another VA trout stream is headed down the tubes...according to some folks the Dan was one of the finest streams in VA until the sediment pool in one of the lakes was breached sometime in the 90's. And now this. >:(
