Dominican Republic: wisdon needed

Need some advice on fishing saltwater.

My wife and I are headed to the Dominican Republic for some R&R. Just booked the trip and we leave Saturday, a quick decision. Have a 9ft 8wt travel rod that I have never used and will be breaking it in on the trip. Would like to fish just off the beach, no boat, just wading. Wife likes to sleep-in and I should be able to get an hour or two of fishing in each morning.

Looking for suggestion on line (floating or sinking), flies, leaders, tippet and any advice. I have never fly fished in salt water before, any help will be appreciated.

If anyone has been to DR please advice as to how great it is. We are staying at Sunscape Casa del Mar, Bayahibe, South Coast, La Romana, Dominican Republic. This is the only place we could find and afford with just a week notice to book.

Thanks,

FlyNut

I took my family to the DR several years ago. Since I lived in Puerto Rico for a while, I speak Spanish well enough that we decided to do a "locals only" tour, staying with friends and going to non-tourist beaches so I don't have specific recommendations. We had a total blast, though, so I'm jealous.

At least at the beaches we went to there were guys that were happy to take you out fishing. I'm not sure how they'd handle a fly fisherman, tho.

I too fished the Dr a few yrs back and had a good time,If I was going to bring just one line it would be a floating line, any general salt water leader will work but bring some mono on te heavy side,25lbs and up for a bite tippet as alot of salt water fish will have sharp teeth and gil plates, might even take some wire as you will surely find cudas and small sharks in the shallows. bring some clousers, decivers, and some type of crab pattern if you can.not sure if you can get out at night but I always did well at night off the beaches and if you can find a dock with some lights shinning in the water check them out

good luck
Jared
