Josh, where have you been seeing those CD reels for cheap? I was looking at getting one, but i thought it was a little out of my price range. By the way, do you know anything about fishing the outer banks or beaches in general, specifically for sharks and possibly for reds, trout, and weaks. You seem to be pretty proficient in the surf. This is not limited to fly tackle because i'm looking to get a heavy 10-12' surf rod specifically for sharks.
Mike, I haven't caught a striper on a fly yet, but i hope to within the next week or so. I fish off of a pontoon boat.

DC, sent you a PM on the reel.
Theres alot of different aspects involved with surf fishing whether it be with traditional gear or on the fly. The first thing you have to learn to do is read a beach. Whether your chunking bait, plugs, or flies you have to be able to find the fish. I like to think of an open ocean beach as a desert with the occassional oasis. Look for holes, bars, sloughs, and other forms of structure. This is where you will find the concentrations of bait that draw in predators. Once you find the structure its just a matter of figuring out what they want to eat.
If you've got some location specific questions, shoot them to me and I'll do my best to answer. I don't have a whole lot of experiences with sharks from the beach, but I chase reds and trout along with spanish mackerel and bluefish with regularity.

Fall Stripers
I think so. Are you referring to the one near Wessinger Island? I have caught a lot of stripers off of that point.

Fall Stripers
I know where you are talking about. I am going out this afternoon and look for schooling. If you see a yellow Action Craft, ride over and say hello. Mike

Fall Stripers
DC, I went out this morning. Saw a few isolated singles busting, but no concentrated schooling or sustained activity.

I've been fishing a custom 8wt rod (built by Versitex) & Reddington LA setup for about 15 years (Stripers to 36", Blues to about 14lbs) and have no issues with the 8wt/12lb tippet... have also landed many Albies & Bonito in fast rips on the Vineyard on 15lb tippets.

Rod,I fish for stripers a few days a week and I also use an 8wt most of the time. While I dont throw heavy lines I can tell you a 9wt is an excellent compromise to a 10wt.Since I got my 9wt, my 10wt has been living in the closet. Its just that more work to cast. The 9 has a little more butt than the 8 without being much heavier. Both my 8 & 9 are Scott Heliplys so im comparing exact models in different weights and there is difference.
