Have you ever noticed....

Have you ever noticed how the time it takes for it to become fully dark is directly proportional to how far you are from the truck? Went up and fished WT Laurel for a bit this evening. Bugs were flying, but the fish weren't really all that interested, so I put on a big ol streamer and just hit deep holes looking for a pig. Had a couple of looks but no takers so I tied on an orange stimulator and caught a couple of Brownies. Right before dark as I was walking out I came up on the newest beaverdam...you know where I'm talking about, and the trout were jumping out of the water after bugs! I'm talking full body leaps one after the other. The only 2 problems were I had promised my wife I'd be home before dark...since I was fishing alone... and the beavers were between me and the fish! They actually held me at bay long enough for it to finally get dark, much earlier than I thought it was going to I might add. If you're up that way either early or late it would be worth your while to check out the big daddy beaver in this family. He's by far the biggest beaver I've ever seen. Ibet he goes close to 40 lbs.

You sayin you had a run in with a Big Brown breaver??

Sorry, Had to. Love that Primus song.

But ya man. It gets Dark on that mountain. I got a friend who is a Master in Martial Art and gets scared of his shadow up there. Its too funny.
Only light that you get is from the cars on the upper road but they are FEW and FAR IN BETWEEN.
Grab ya one of the clip on lights for your hat. They are nice. Help my blind arse tie knots too.

Just an update on the streams around Damascus. It rained buckets here last night and this morning. WT Laurel and Beaverdam are both chocolate colored, as are the south fork and middle fork of the Holston for Smallmouth. Look elsewhere for fishing opportunities.

You must be a flatlander who's relocated. Any hillbilly can tell you that it gets dark in the hollers long before it gets dark on top of the mountain. That said, yeah, I've miscalculated a few times, in each direction.

I've never had a run in with a beaver, but that big with those teeth, yeah, it pays to be careful.

Look into one of those LED headlamps. They are compact, but give off plenty of light, and run a long time off a single set of batteries. Great aid for hiking and camping.

And get a waterproof one......

Cheap, tiny, and really light. My pack always has one.
