That's a great way to fish riffles. The
"broadside float" of Joe Brooks a great way to fish a streamer. Joe Brooks who wrote about this method is one of the greats of fly fishing. His book, simply title "Trout Fishing" was one of the early books I read.
The mending of fly line to fish streamers is much like the mending of line to fish wet flies. See my FAQ from my years with Flyfish@:
