July 1-2 Watauga, SHO

I was able to get a few hours on both these streams this weekend. The generating schedules were not kind to the wade fisher. Sad to report that although the weather was beautiful, the fishing was very slow, and bugs almost non-existent. I managed a couple nice rainbows though. Did not catch even one brown.

Mr. Elk is right, bug activitey was non-existent the three days I was over that way this weekend. Caught fish on Sat. thanks to scuds. Sunday the fish were harder to come by but did catch three browns out of the first 6 fish caught. Caught another brown late in the day. Monday the fishing was GREAT! Caught several 14 to 16 inch wild fish. Great time! Generation started at 1:00 on Sat. Sunday they only generated from 3 until 6 but Monday and Tuesday they started generation at 12 noon and ran until 12 midnight on the SoHo.

Water temps on the SoHo were 47 to 49 degrees in the mornings when I started and rose to 52 to 54 when I was getting off the river because of generation. Seined the river several times and not much if anything was found in top third of the water. Didn't see but 10 or 12 mayfly bugs come off all weekend. One or two caddis noticed......... Lots of midges found around the lantern at camp at night however.

Fished the Watugua on Tuesday and caught fish with a brown or two mixed in but you really had to work and search for the fish!

See ya on the river,

Ralph
