N Mills

Hit the N Mills yesterday afternoon. Stocking report said fish were put in there.

It was slow. I caught two sunfish and missed one other fish that might have been a chub or stoneroller.

Overcast and somewhat rainy but still nice. Water was very clear and cold.

Well dang! I forgot they did stock a little in July. Not sure why, but still...

Thanks for the reminder.

So does the North Mills revert to Hatchery Supported during the summer? I'm guessing that on a small, easily-accessed stream such as that, the bait fishers vacum them out within a couple of days. Heck, they do it even during DH, as we've discussed to death on here.

I wish that we could put together some fly fishing only streams. Yes, it seems a little arrogant to some, but most fly fishers are just there to enjoy the skill of catching not as much for dinner. It would eliminate many that are walking out with a stringer full of fish. I know the D is basically that, but those are some picky fish, as discussed several times.

Question

While we're on the N. Mills, would the habitat be better if the water came from the bottom of the dam instead of the top? Has this ever been considered?

I figure it's not real deep, but I figure the temp would be lower. Any hydrologists out there?

Thanks.

I don't think it would make much of difference. Plus the water at the bottom probably does not have as much dissolved oxygen. What would really help is removing the dam altogether actually.

There are already a few wild rainbow trout in the N Mills anyway at least on the national forest portion.

You would think it would support some wild browns like the nearby S Mills but I have never encountered one.

The D isn't the only FF,C&R stream we have. Also, there are some single hook, artificial lure, C&R streams which is just as good, IMO.

Heck their are plenty of wild streams that fish just as good if not better then some or our C & R streams.

bayview, check out the trout maps on www.ncwildlife.org, they have been really helpful for finding C&R streams and some not so secret wild streams.
