New fly idea

I went fishing on a new creek yesterday, Hooked into a nice rainbow in the first 15 minutes or so on a prince nymph. I had pretty high hopes after that but the next 90 minutes or so proved trout-less.

One thing I did learn though was that my most successful fly overall is a strike indicator! I had numerous strikes on my indicator yesterday which isn't unusual. What really shocked me was when I snagged my nymph on a rock. I lifted my rod to try and dislodge the nymph and by doing so lifted the indicator a foot or so of the surface. That's when a little rainbow thought the indicator looked so delicious he launched himself full body out of the water, a foot into the air to grab it!

Normally when that sort of thing happens I'll try a royal wulff. I figure it floats well, has some red on it, maybe it'll work. So I put on the wulff, nope. Then a parachute adams, nope. Then a caddis, nope. They only like the indicator.

I think I might just start "tying" strike indicator flies.

Usually when they first stock the DH streams and the trout are in pods like they're still in the hatchery, you can drag an orange bream popper over the top of them and catch loads of them. Not traditional trout fly fishing, but it's still loads of fun. . .

Wild fish will hit the strike indicator too. I used to tie big foam beetles in florescent orange and yellow and fish them with a dropper of something like a hare's ear or prince nymph.

Get one of those stick on indicators and wrap it on a baitholder hook. Hit that thing with a bit of zap a gap and your in business.....
