Diabetic. I keep them handy in case my blood sugar drops too low. That's why I refused to share any with you last time we went fishing.

I agree with much of what has been said on here. I think to a degree we are all elitists since we make the choice to fish in a means that is the most difficult of all ways of angling to catch a fish. Personally, I think it is very hard to find southern fly anglers who are textbook "snobs" since very few of us enjoy life due to "Daddy's Money". Not to label any group a "snob", but I see more of this type behavor in folks who partake in golf or offshore saltwater angling. For the record, all of the folks I've fly fished with are just down to earth folks, maybe with a tad bit more education than other types of anglers, but education sadly does not mean country club incomes.
Now with that being said, I've encounted snob like behavor amoung other anglers in fly shops or at social gatherings that I've been forced to attend that only like to fish "certain waters" with guides. I know of one person who only fishes with high dollar rods and looks like him comes out of an Orvis catalog and claims to love fly fishing but doesn't enjoy small streams with tight casting and small trout. Those folks are the snobs, but they are also the ones who drop cash on gear and guides that allows the industry to continue because I sure don't spend that kind of money. Yeah, I may not "like" them, but they have a place in the sport, even thou I have no idea what Zen is and figure if I've expierenced it that it took place in the company of a woman and not on a trout stream in the company of other anglers. The "snobs" or "wanta bes" in a twisted way allow us to live the lifestyle that they claim to want, even if we sometimes enjoy a lad back day on a DH stream trying to find a fly that trout won't bit with a dip, camo hat with Tiger Paw and a rod that costs under $200.

What does a pretentious young fly fisherman make?
Why an old crumugeonly snob of a fly fisherman ofcourse.

All of the above said in jest (sort of).

You guys are great and I mean that with all sincerity. I love to watch the social dynamic on here and amongst other friends with in the fly fishing community.

Ill tell you what....for all our flaws, misconceptions, preconcieved notions, elietist attitudes, and general bull****ery (to steal a phrase)... I dont know of a one of you who aint an out and out CHARACHTER, and that fact alone makes the rest of it not only tolerable but completly forgivable.

Take care you eccentric bunch a ******s,

Riparian

Negative, I guess you guys just over looked my post...

Fun thread Rip!

Fun comments to read on this thread regarding "beginners", "purists", "snobs", "DH vs wild streams", etc, etc. Some of it in humor of course but I run into some serious comments too.
Dixieland Delight nailed it on the fourth post when he said "it is a personal journey". Nuff said. Why waste time trying to label the way some people like to fish. As long as it is within regulations, "it is a personal journey".
Attempting to change or label other fishermen is just jaw-flapping, or gum bumping. Enjoy your "personal journey". As Riparian said "it's just a fish".
Tight lines (to those who like em tight)
Slack lines (to those who like em slack)

New- stronger tippet material... by far stronger..
I do not like that rods have gotten stiffer thru the years.. the idea that you can cast further wilth a stiff rod vs. a medium action rod is NEW wrong. And feel is everything..
Otherwise, it is your day, fish it the way you want to..

Hooks. When I first started tying flies, Mustad hooks were pretty much it. Unclosed eyes were not uncommon as were hook breakages at the bend from poor heat treating compounded by too tight pressure in the tying vise. Then Tiemco came along. Had to watch how you held the fly to keep from getting stuck while you tied it on the leader. I can't remember when I saw the last poorly formed eye or had a Tiemco fracture.

First and foremost, I am deeply disturbed and offended by this thread. I know for a FACT that I've posted some pretty darned funny stuff over the past few years; and I resent the implication that somebody else is funnier;based on a thread that I can't even read!

( Why, that's like voting on something you didn't even read! Who does THAT?? )

Secondly, Rip, It's been my contention for awhile now that the problem with fly fishing and overcrowding isn't all the new blood entering the sport, it's the failure of the old folks to die off quickly enough!

Also, what's this junk about DH fish not being a challenge???

I find them to be an enigma, wrapped in a mystery, tucked into a box that smells like fish.
Some days, I can catch them on the bottom, on an egg and a woolly booger dropper.
BUT other days, it takes a woolly booger THEN the egg.
Finally, if that wasn't bad enough, Ive had days where I had to fish an Egg and an egg!
which is why I carry 4 boxes stuffed full of flies- to hide the egg patterns in my chest pocket.

Sadly, though, I don't think I'd get much joy out of sub 10" fish....even if they're wild. That's another reason to join my club:
F%^ the trout, Smallies Forever!

I dont know if Im young blood or old school. For one, I must be young blood, because Ive only been fly-fishing about 20 times total. (about 5 times a year for the last 4 years) But then again I am old school in everything else that I do.

But enough of that, I do love fly fishing for trout. I dont have any friends that fly fish, so Ive learned everything (which probably isnt much) from the internet. I have a lot of friends and family that bait/spinreel fish however.

I became frustrated at one point with fly fishing (wind knots, tangled up, no fish, no action on the water, etc.) and was wondering why I go through all the trouble of preparing for hours the night before, driving 2 to 4 hours to the stream or river just to get skunked and not catch anything! Ive caught hundreds of fish in my life of all species, but fly fishing, which I really respected without knowing much about it, was extremely difficult to me and still is. Not able to afford a guide, this forum has been extremely helpful to me. I didnt even know about this board until about a year ago, and have learned so much more since finding the forum.

So, old school, young blood, Im both I guess but I own 1 fly rod and I look forward to everytime I get to hit the water and land a beautiful cold water trout, and I am thankful for this forum and the people on it that have given info and advice.

I have been lucky enough to have three passions outside of my lovely wife.....The Grateful Dead, Wine and Fly fishing. Unfortunately all three of these activities attract strong opinions. If I were to substitute a few words here or there, like Pig, Brent, Keith and Donna....The thread would read much the same as a GD thread.

When I'm old and not able to stand in the water anymore, I'll miss ANY kind of water, with ANY kind of equipment and ANYone young or old who'll listen to me complain about how much more of a flyfisherman I am than all others.
