Stephen,

Have you gotten to the age yet that you determine where you go fishing based on the number of rest areas you have to pass? These kids don't realize that after a certain age you never want to miss an opportunity.

I'll tell you from personal experience that it doesn't matter how old you are or how many rest stops you pass if you decide to partake in the fried bologna sandwich served at a certain gas station in Goochland.
The hijinks that ensued out at Mossy Creek as a result of that particular meal didn't make me feel very "elitist" either, even if I was carrying a bamboo rod and an English reel.

One of my favorite Jack Nicholson quotes:

Quote:
Here's something to remember when you're older Thomas - never pass up a bathroom, never waste a hard on, and never trust a fart.

You know in Europe you can just pull over and do your business on the side of the road without anyone paying you attention. Man that would be nice here. I don't have that problem yet, but I am sure it is coming! Thats why i am enjoying my youth!

Ah Ha

So after five pages we realize that we are all elitist snobs.
That we are a live and let fish bunch, untill the other guy is catching more fish and then he is doing it in an impure way or hogging a hole.

"All ________ fly fishermen are elitist *** holes or the ones who use ________ are cheaters, except the ones I know."

What does a pretentious young fly fisherman make?
Why an old crumugeonly snob of a fly fisherman ofcourse.

All of the above said in jest (sort of).

You guys are great and I mean that with all sincerity. I love to watch the social dynamic on here and amongst other friends with in the fly fishing community.

Ill tell you what....for all our flaws, misconceptions, preconcieved notions, elietist attitudes, and general bull****ery (to steal a phrase)... I dont know of a one of you who aint an out and out CHARACHTER, and that fact alone makes the rest of it not only tolerable but completly forgivable.

Take care you eccentric bunch a ******s,

Riparian

I do try to avoid egg patterns though for purely moral reasons.

Then how do you explain that jar of Uncle Josh's pork rinds you carry in the top left pocket of your vest? I think I saw a few salmon eggs in there the last time...

TO quote an old fart, Nick Yamana, from that early 70's classic Barney Miller, "Very well put," Riparian. Couldn't have said it better myself. This forum needed some tongue-in-cheek self-needling. Nice to see no one taking it too personally.

Oh, and my fly-fishing likes are:
-My do-most-everything Cabelas 4 wt
-furled leaders
-tiny little dust-ball midge flies from the DRO that I invariably drop/lose/donate to the "Rhodo fly shop"
-wild, unpressured brookies that will hit anything!
-hanging out with old-timers in country store lunch counters
-the mountain scenery that makes even a lousy day of fishing memorable
-the SEFF when I can't get out myself
-fishing with like-minded sportsmen regardless of age
-the occasional perfect drift with the perfect fly that catches the perfect fish we all live for

Dislikes:
-trashed streams
-elitism in any form, anywhere (I fish with hardware too on occasion just for a change)
-crowded DH streams (I've about given up on the whole idea)
-poachers
-people who disrespect the environment/stream/fish that are a gift to us all

I hope to see/meet some of you characters on the stream when I can get this National Board certification monkey off my back and out of my evenings and weekends.

Regards-SHD
