Question about Backcountry Campsites in GSMNP

I was wondering about how the backcountry sites within the park are set up. Does each number on the map correspond to one individual campsite or are there multiple sites in each location? I haven't seen anything that indicates one way or another. Thanks!

The numbers represent designated camping sites in the park...the designated sites offer multiple camping sites. I think the only sites that are available to a certain number of campers are the sites that require a reservation. Here is a link that shows the numbered sites and if they require a reservation. http://www.yoursmokies.com/smokymoun...rkcamping.html

I've got an old Trails Illustrated map of the Park and I'd assume the newer maps have the same info on them. Anyhow, the map has an index on one side to the campsites showing the number, name (in the old days before they were numbered they were known only by their name), the number of campers the site will accommodate, whether or not reservations are required and whether or not horses are permitted.

These maps are now published by National Geographic and you can pick one up at most any outdoor type store for about $12. Highly recommended.

Thanks! I've been using the trail map from the National Parks Service website for the Smoky Mountains but it definitely doesn't have that info on it. All it does is distinguish between the sites for which you need a reservation and those for which you don't. I'll get a copy of that Nat Geo one asap.
