Raleigh / Cary - William B. Umstead Park

Anyone in the area ever explored the park. Looking at google earth it seems theres some good lookin water in the park. Also, theres a spillway near Old Reedy Creek Road that turns into Crabtree Creek that looks very fishy ... Anyone ever fished the area. I am thinking the area would be loaded with carp.

Any ideas / experience let me know.

Its a little overwhelming ...

fished in high school, in early 90's...had a lot of fun, bought all i got for you......I can however tell you where some monster carp are in cary in mac gregor downs that provide lots of fun on the fly or ultralight...I was a groundskeeper there and had access, not sure how tight they are now....
good luck the park, exploring will be fun without the climbing elevations of the mtns.....

Yeah I pass Mac Gregor Downs a lot but I am hesitant to fish there ... I'll have to see if I can talk to someone about it ... I think I'm going to try and call the Park and see what they reccomend ??

Out there it's much easier to ask for forgiveness than permission, unless they have signs posted everywhere, if you have to ask I would go back to the maintainence building and ask who ever the boss is back there now. Guys back there were normally much easier to deal with then private CC pro shop gentlemen.

Spring or summer I am in Cary more than I am now, We will have to hook up and to some stealth fishing in my old lucky holes.

Most of the time, I was just asked to leave rather nicely and I told them I had permission b/c I worked there. I am not telling you to lie, I am just saying they never brought armed guards to run me off, normally just an older retired former FL resident(no offense FL folks but you and Ohio are slowly taking over our state) that had nothing better to do that worry about who was fishing in a pond in the middle of Cary.

The thing is in Cary there are lots of people who have nothing better to do then worry about whose fishing in "there" water (in case you didn't know in Cary people own natural resources) ... Anyways I'm always having trouble finding places to fish in Cary although theres lots of water ...

On the positive side I'm a young guy and can run fast ...

Whenever you get back here make sure and PM me ... I've never had the chance to get together with anyone one the board but would love to fish ... Especially if you have some secret holes ... You share the spots I'll tie the flies ... Look forward to it ...

I can run fast too, so we will be a good fit for MD's. Only time it got me in trouble was when the same guy who called me out for fishing told my boss, I was mowing to loud while he was playing golf. Folks over there are nuts...I will try and remember you next time we are in town....does not happen often as folks have a house in their home town that is much closer for me hauling 3 kids to get to.

I've hiked it tons, but long before I took up fishing. I never thought about fishing it. Might be interesting because, as you say, there's lots of water. Let me kinow if you give it a try!

Thanks to a PM I got some good information and decided to visit the Park this morning with my brother ... After a long hike we found some water ... High, muddy, and fast water ... Found some slow pocket water and hooked up with some decent sized bream ... Not bad for this time of year in the given circumstances ... Hope to go back Friday and do some more searching for Spring ... Its definately a great escape that holds some fish ...
