Question Schlappen...

Ran across this in a couple of recipes...

Can it be bought in packs like Whiting 100's?

Thanks, don

They sell them, but not like 100's. You gotta get the bundle, but Whitings are better quality

These are used a lot in salt water and big Bass flies. They come in every color imaginable and make great Decievers, Half n Halfs and Seaducers. Use the longest ones in the bunch to make BIG flies ie....6-8 inchers.
Here's a little hint to tying them onto your hook.
They tend to roll with thread torque so before you lash them on, place them all together just like you want them to look and mash the quills at the tie in portion with needle nose pliers and tie them all on at once. Start with light wraps to put them in place them tighten down from there, a little glue wont hurt either.
I still have a bunch of Greenbacks (Pilchards, Scaled Sardines) that I use to use in my other life as a saltwater afficiondo.
4/6/8 SS hook
Black Thread
Crystal Flash
6-8 White Schlappen tied inboard style
Sparse bunch of white deer hair
2-3 strands of Green crystal flash
6-8 strands of peathingy herl on top tied just short of Schlappen length.

Snook, Reds, Flounder, Trout and maybe even the elusive Cypress Trout

Actually, schlappen is from the base of the tail right behind the saddle. If you purchase a whole saddle, you'll get a bit of schlappen with it. The schlappen from dryfly quality roosters isn't much use, though. It's too narrow and pointed at the tips. The good stuff comes from the bigger saltwater/wetfly quality roosters. As indicated, though, most mail order supplies carry strung schlappen in a wide variety of colors.

Indian and Chinese saddles are cheap, and can be substituted for schlappen on all but the biggest saltywater flies.

I made an off-color remark to my wife this morning, and I got schlappened for it!

Jule:

I'm so lucky, because I don't have to say anything in the morning in order to get shalappened by my wife.
