Im a bamboo guy for the most part, and have been a Lublgrud enthusiast for a couple years. Dave Cottengim puts out some of the finest casting sticks in the south, and is in NC. Means a little more to me to have a rod built by someone local who understands the local conditions. If your a native brookie freak like myself, you cant beat his "little gem's". Absolutely perfect for our local wild waters.
As far as mass produced composite rods, Ive been loyal to Orvis for years, mainly the Superfines. Although I have to say Im not exactly happy with the direction the company has been heading for a few years as in styling. A rod is a piece of art to me not just a tool. Yeah its true the Helios and Hydros series have great performance, and are as light as a feather. But on the other hand they are about as pleasing to the eye as your average truck stop waitress. In my opinion the weight of a rod has never been a issue. I mean sure we all get sore from time to time, but its more due to the repetition of casting 2000 times in one day, not from the rod weight. Anyone else feel that way?
