SOHO 8/1 - rookie trip
Hit the SOHO up Sat afternoon for the first time. Dropped by the Champion's place for some advice and Rod was super helpful with shuttle info. Floated from the dam to Jack's place with pretty good success during a great sulphur hatch. Crew caught 10-12 total with a 14" and 18" brown all caught on the flies Rod suggested. Wanted to camp over night and feesh again today, but the weather scared us back down the mountain.
Since it was my fist time on the river I consider the trip a success, but I learned a few things that I will remember for the next of hopefully many future trips:
1) Stop by the Champion's shop on the way to the river and listen.
2) Kayaks aren't the optimal bote for this river. We only wanted to take one car and can't fit three toons on the roof rack, but three Tarpon 120s will barely make it. Navigating the river with one generator was never an issue with the yaks, but it runs too fast to anchor safely. We beached the boat wherever possible and waded, but this river is best fished from the bote during generation. We passed by tons of feesshy water and rising trouts because there was no place to pull off in the yak. I think a toon could be safely ancored in back eddies, so I'll be hauling the trailer up next time.
