SOT kayak questions

I have read about using a piece of pvc pipe inserted through a scupper hole to hold your position. I tried this yesterday with my wading staff and it worked great. My concern is that this could cause cracking around the scupper holes. Anybody ever try this?

Also, what do you use for an anchor? (Yeah, I know all about how dangerous this can be.)

How do you lock your anchor rope?

Thanks.

I don't think that it would harm the kayak but I think a long piece of pvc might get in my way. You might want to run your question up the flag pole at kayakfishingstuff.com.

My anchor runs through an eye at the front of my boat. I tie the line around a cleat. Many people rig up "anchor trolleys" on the side of their boats.

IMHO, anchors are not too dangerous, so long as you have the correct type of anchor and don't anchor in swift water. The kind with hooks are bad on moving water but good for the ocean or lakes. I use a 5 pound mushroom for rivers. Drag chains are also a cheap and popular option for rivers. Keep a knife with you.

It might make obvious sense to run the anchor off the back of the boat. On mine, however, this would interfere with the rudder. I have not had any big concerns with the boat swinging because I usually don't put out very much rope. Regardless, it is easy to move around on a SOT kayak. It is probably easier to pull the anchor if it is off the front, too. A side mount is a really bad idea because it will be too easy to tip the kayak.

As far as anchoring a yak, the guys in FL, lots of shallow fishing, really swear by "Dick's Stake OutPole".

I could not find them on Eugene's site, but if he does sell them, please buy from him and I apologize.

http://www.captdick.net/StakeOutPole.htm

I know some of them make their own, and some even use PVC as you have done. I think the issue of sticking it down through the scupper (see below) is wear and tear around the scupper hole, which, over time, might require larger stoppers if you use them.

As for anchors. DO NOT ANCHOR A YAK IN MOVING WATER. My yak has an anchor trolley, essentially, two "pulley" type devices attached to fore and aft with "yak cord, running through them in a loop. You tie on your anchor, then let it out, tie off excess, then use the loop to position the anchor either fore, aft, or wherever.

As you will see in the above link, these guys (who I have communicated with and are real yak fishing EXPERTS) are using the pole on their anchor pulley. I would recommend that solution, rather than through the scupper.

Also, You will have a pm shortly.

I have fished yaks for four years now and never felt compelled to anchor, btw.

YGTBSM......

I still have the visual of a prominent attorney, in a HOBIE yak, on the French Broad, all but going for a swim, with an anchor line trailing behind, and the bow of the yak, pointing skyward.

LOL. That guy might not be the sharpest tool in the shed when it comes to boats but I hear he learned his lessons very well and won't make the same mistakes twice. Jim, hope to see you this weekend. I am bringing my 'yak.
