Starting up

I'm still relatively new to the sport of fly fishing, and am now wanting to take up rod building. The rod I want to build will be a Lamiglas glass rod. Until I'm to the point of being able to build a rod effectively I don't want to put in the money the the components and blank and do a crap job. My thought is to buy a cheap spin rod at Walmart and disassemble it and put it together again. Any thoughts on this, help, or other ideas are very welcome. Thanks.

I think it would be more work to disassemble the spin rod than it would be to build the new one!

There is nothing to worry about when building your own. Just take your time and it will look fine. This nice thing about it is if you make a mistake you cut the thread and start the wrap over. You can do that as many times as you need to. When it is how you want it put the finish on the thread. If it was me, I'd just buy a cheap kit with all the components and a blank and give it a go.

Start from scatch

I would have to agree with the previous post. Disassembling a finished rod would be more work that it is worth. Both Cabela's and Mudhole Tackle Supply have inexpensive kits that will allow you to build a very good quality rod.

Define a crap job.

Is it a finished rod that won't cast? That won't happen.

Or is it a rod that has some blemishes like a bubbles in the epoxy or gap in the wraps, but still fishes well.

If you start with reasonable quality materials, you will finish with a very serviceable rod.
