Suggested reading on fishing western nc

I was wondering if there were many good books about fishing the western nc area? I already have a few books: Trout Streams of Southern Appalachia, GSM Angler's Companion by Ian Rutter(great book), and another Smoky Mtns. book, i just can't remember the name of it. Thought y'all might know of some more. Thanks alot.

MTNMAN-
I was going through the same search this time last year. I just really started digging into flyfishing and was blown away by all the locations in WNC. Need less to say, my search came up fruitless. Mind you I only checked Boone area bookstores (new and used). There were, as you know, many comprehensive books but nothing to do specifically with WNC.
Amazon.com or something similar perhaps?

Don Kirk has a book about GSMNP fishing, and that may be the other one you can't think of. His book plus the two you mentioned are the extent of my Park fishing library.

I do have the one by don kirk and i really enjoy that one as well as the one by ian rutter. However, the other book, "Trout Streams of Southern Appalachia," just isn't very good in my opinion. It has a description of a bunch of streams in nc, but it seems to me like the book was written by someone wanting to make some money, not by a fly fisherman. Just my $0.02. I really wish that there were some more......

There is a new book by Ian Rutter that just came out called Rise Rings and Rhododendron. I have not bought it yet but I do have a birthday coming up so I will ask for it from the fiancee. There really isn't any specific books on Fly Fishing WNC. Why I don't know. Most states with good trout fishing have books written on fly fishing the best streams and other bodies of water in them.

I just remembered that i have heard of that book as well. I believe i saw it online and from what i remember, it looks pretty neat and i will probably end up getting it as well. I think that book, however, focuses more on just telling stories about fishing in different places. It still looks very good though, i read a sampling on their website and it has ian's fantastic words, as usual, and some great photos to boot!

The only other book I know of is another "southern apps" guide from the '70's by J. Wayne Fears. I find it cursory and haven't looked at it in years. If you don't find the Jacobs book useful, don't even bother to pick this one up off a $1 table.

FWIW, I've talked with Jimmy Jacobs a few times and have deduced that the whole economics of the deal aren't that great, so don't expect much market driven competition; it's more a labor of love. He has several books, most taking a "whole region" angle; more potential buyers that way.

Good luck.

I heard somewhere about a year ago that Jim Casada was working on a book about streams of GSMNP. My recollection is that the book was about ready to be published. Has anyone else heard that? Or did I just dream it?

My recommendation is not to look in a book. There isn't much information there regarding North Carolina. Instead, look at a magazine, titled "Wildlife in North Carolina." I would look at several years' worth of issues, and pay particular attention to the issues where Jim Dean was the editor and/or author.

There was not the sensation of the water's raging, but rather that of its alertness and resourcefulness as it split apart at rocks, frothed lightly, corkscrewed, fluted, fell, recovered, ...and then ran out of sight...I looked for a way through...

this is not exactly what you are asking for but there are several references to NC.

http://www.southeastflyfishingforum....ead.php?t=8523

I have just finished re-reading this book after having spent some time on small streams in NC.... I found it to be right on target .

If you are looking for where to fish < this one will not be helpful > if you are looking for how to handle this type of water it is

outstanding
