I appreciate the offer but no thanky!!! I'll stay up here in the land of milk & honey...moonshiners and chicken theives.

In all seriousness though, we run all shift long as well, btrapr. We dont have near the violent crimes you guys have (Thank God!) but we still have the dope pushers, theives, domestic violence, etc, etc, that no community is ammune to anymore. Our crime rate is much lower but so is our staff. Our entire dept. is probably what one district's shift is for you guys. My guys often have to cover 100 plus square miles....ALONE!!

Be safe,

Captain DL Glenn,
MCSD

I work for the VA Dept of Corrections and it seems to me that thiefs are the worst kind of inmates that we deal with. They are usually disrespectful, and don't care for anyone but themselves. They are capable of aything and have no morals. This could expain why they would break in and steal your fishing stuff. Around here it is bad to be drug related break ins. I hate to see stuff get taken to feed some pill heads habit. That just burns me up. We don't have a gang problem to speak of but the drgs make up for it I guess.

I got my car broken into not a year ago. Before that I had been broken into multiple times. I also forgot to remove the faceplate of a expensive Alpine radio. The crackhead that hit it was not as savy. He broke my window glass. Took the radio, left d gps, ipod and everything else I had. This happened in a mom and pop eat out in Charlotte. What burns me is that the restaurant knew by experience that they get break in their customers vehicles but they dont educate their customer about the possibility neither they have a camera with a vcr and a big monitor pointing to the spot where their trouble happens all the time. It would really not cost them that much, it would help getting the thief and give a piece of mind to their customers.
I neiter eat there anymore or recomend the place to my friends. I actually try to keep them from it. Too bad, is a nice place, good food but they dont seem to care about their parking lot problem.

As someone here say, your best bet to not get robbed is to clean your vehicle of any valuables. I do that then I leave every compartment open so all you have to do is look thru the window and the thief should be convinced there is nothing to take. However, that might be enough to get him piss and break your glass like it happen to a friend. But unless you hire a person to watch your car, you will always run into the chance on getting your car broken into. As far as aftermarket alarms, when was the last time you saw anyone pay attention to one? Seriously, I made a living out of intalling those. I still got broken into my work van multiple times even having installed one of the best alarms in the market, roll up windows, vacum door lock, motion sensor, door and hood sensors and chassis sensor. Still, no difference... Im not saying dont get an alarm. In some situation it will work, but if you are in a secluded area, or an area with way too many vehicles, nobody cares about an alarm going off. After they get in your vechile it takes them but a few seconds to open the hood and disconnect the battery. Heck, in my case they didn''t even bother, they went trhu my van while the alarm was goin off.

Good luck to everyone,
Cheers...

Okay,

So I can lay no claim to any law enforcement experience other than friends who serve ( mad props you folks.....you do a good thing :) ) ;

But there's a dangerous trend I see when people talk about crimes, and it really chaps my rosy cheeks. In my mind, even implying that you are "asking for a break in" by owning nice things or even displaying your nice things that you're proud of is a dangerous trend.
We're really implying that the victim of a crime is somehow partially responsible for the crime itself . From a philosophical standpoint, thats really no different than saying a rape victim was "advertising" by dressing seductively. Its just not true, and it ticks me off that we've become so used to crime that we view it that way.

absolutely 100% of the responsibility of a crime lies in the hands of the @#SShole commiting the crime, and no where else. You are not "to blame" for forgetting to remove your radio faceplate; we are ALL to blame for allowing you to feel you have to hide what is rightfully yours in order to keep it safe.

okay....so in the real world you have to hide your stuff....and I drive a Wrangler and DONT lock my doors. Why? Because my radio is worth 200 bucks, and my top is worth 800.
But still, conceptually , the whole thing pisses me off. Here's an oversimplification for you:
yes its hard to steal a radio without a faceplate....but its also hard to break into cars with broken fingers.

I understand what your saying. I happen to agree. However, we can do things in an attemp to keep from being victims.

Cheer...

Amen. It just pi$$es me off to no end to think this way. What we should be thinking is to not be a victim and be proactive. If law enforcement folks cannot or will not prevent this type of crime then we should resort to vigilante justice. Yes, there... I said it..Park a nice car in a likely place and lie in wait... when a crackhead comes knocking..we knock him in the head and toss him in the ditch. The law uses common sense and looks the other way. My father used to talk of this happening all the time in the deep south when he was young. A couple farmers barns got vandalized and they all got together and took turns watching each others property. Then they took matters into their own hands. One thing a thief really fears is folks who are not bound by the ridiculous letter of the law and are liable to put a serious foot in his Azz.
