Thursday on the SoHo

Me and a friend have been fishing the SoHo most Thursday's lately. Yesterday was no exception.

Started out in the upper part of the river- had some really picky fish. It is definitely time for 7x or finer. Using 6x I didn't pick up a one of the little buggers, my friend caught 2 (we were both using comparadun's). There were people fishing up and downstream who didn't seem to be doing any better.

The morning pulse came in and we fished a little more before moving down river.

We moved to a spot that has consistently been good. I added some 7x and kept fishing the comparadun- I had been seeing rises all day. My friend was fishing a split case nymph and catching a few. So I finally switched and picked up a few fish right away. But then the weather started to turn and we headed to the car (for lunch and to pick up a few more splitcases at the fly shop.)

Well then came the big azz storm talked about in another thread. So we had to end the day and head back home.

The SoHo seems to be one of those places where the tippet size really does make a difference at times. Here in the last few months I have been using 7x fluro tippet and ran out and only had some 5x mono with me. Wasn't getting much action and went to the fly shop and got some more 7x and things turned around for me.

You can catch 'em (and actually land 'em) on 6X. It all depends on your fly, and a drag-free drift. Your leader and 6X whippet has to land on the water with S-curves, and an upstream mend.

I don't like 7x whippets. Hook a big 'un, and you might not get him in.

Just my .02 cent's worth.....

So -- you were also in the big AZZ thunderstorm Thursday afternoon? It was a doozy. I'm still sore all over, and my hair is singed.

While my friend and I were fishing we heard the thunder and looked up at the sky and started moving toward the bank. We were both hungry and the fish seem to turn off again. Just after we got to the car it started to rain, it was while we were in the fly shop it really opened up. So we pulled up a couple chairs and bs'd with Matt and Rod for a while. After a quick lunch it was clear that we were done for the day.

As for the 6x- I was getting a good drift, I think my fly was to big thought (was using a 16, next time I'll try 18's.) Those fish seem to have gotten smarter over the last month or two (they've seen a lot of flies in that time.)
