Smile Tuckaseegee Report 10.27.09

Hey guys, I've been a member of this forum for awhile, but have mostly spent my time, until now, on a different forum. I figure I'll start off with a post from yesterday when I went to the Tuck.

I've had some rough fishing the past couple months (the last river I tried was the Green a couple weeks ago and got skunked ), so I headed to my favorite NC river, the Tuck. I got on the river at about 9 or so and put in at a spot that's always been great, or empty. This time it was empty. I moved on upstream just above the fork and ended up catching a few decent rainbows, all about 10". It wasn't a fish every cast, but I was really happy to be catching some.

After lunch, I moved up toward the bridge and fished upstream. I saw a couple huge brookies, but they were by the fish camp in deep still water, so I had no chance. I did end up catching 7 or 8 more, all Rainbows, except for one Brookie. I called it quits about 2 and headed home. It was a great day; I caught almost a dozen, lost a few and remembered why I love the Tuck come Oct. 1.

I fished the Tuck also yesterday.About 3 I got out there. It was down alot and fishing was a little more difficult than usual. I managed to catch a 12 inch bow and a 15 inch brown in the couple hours I was there. The fish seemed to be in the shallow riffles. PM me sometime when you come back.

I definitely will; I love that river. I guess you know the river a little better than I do, because I thought that it was a good amount of water. I was probably just happy to be catching fish though!

I just started fishing the river last year when I moved to school. I have learned alot about fly fishing and the Tuck from a couple guys that I know that fish it alot. I saw in one pic you had that one of the bows hit a small looked like copper john. Yesterday they were feeding on stoneflys and right at dark there was a very good sulphur hatch.

Yeah, I need to start using stoneflies more, I have them in my box and never use them. I would've liked to have been there for that sulphur hatch, I bet it was nice. Yeah, all of mine hit the copper john or pheasant tail; I would say it was pretty even between the two. You go to WCU?

The Green can be a finicky DH from time to time. Especially depending on rain and water release schedule. After a few weeks those fish tend just hunker down behind a rock to stay out of the current and a guide friend of mine when asked in the shop what flies to fish on the Green he always hands the costumer a box of split shot. Thats the magic there. Get down to em, even when the water is off, its a nymphing water. Also the Green now and the Green two years ago are two different rivers when it comes to quality of fish. There are more DH waters now and some of them got some really good fish this year. Feel free to shoot me a PM when you get your posts up to 10 (just make two more here doesnt even have to make sense) if you have any more rough fishing. Im no expert and have slumps myself but two heads are better than one.

Take Care,
Riparian

Thanks, I appreciate the offer; I'll definitely take you up on it. I'm trying to fish some new water this year. My home water is the Chattooga, but I'm wanting to hit a lot of the DH water this winter. I've had a couple good days on the Green, but I didn't so much as see a fish that last trip. The Tuck made up for it though! Thanks again for the help!
