Watauga River Special (WRS) Step by Step

Watauga River Special (WRS) Step by Step

Hook: Daiichi 1220 #10
Bead: 1/8 Gold or Bigger
Lead: 7 wraps of .25
Thread: 8/0 Uni … if available use G.S.P 50 denier (it’s bullet proof)
Tail: Tan marabou lightly dyed black to imitate PT Marabou
(use PT Marabou if available)
Body: Tan DDH Leech Dubbing..Touch Dubbed…Teased with Velcro
Ribbing: Any Small to Medium Gage Wire (Wire Disapears in dubbing)
Collar: Pheasant Almond (Church Window) 1.5 turns stroke both sides of the feather to the rear while winding

1. Place the bead on the hook and mount in vice

2. 7 wraps of .25 lead shove into countersunk bead

3. Coat lead wraps with Sally Henson’s Hard as Nails

4. Start Thread wrap over lead wraps

5. Bring thread to the rear and tie in Marabou ~ hook length tail

6. Bind down marabou down the body to build up underbody

7. Return thread to rear and tie in wire ribbing

8. Touch dub a rope of DDH Dubbing

9. Build a tapered body with dubbing towards the front

10. Couter wrap wire rib to the front to help hold dubbing in place.

11. Tease out dubbing with Velcro and sweep fibers back along body

12. Whip finish here. If this fly tears up the collar will be the first to go
That way you can add a collar to a beat up fly for rejuvination.

13. Select and tie in Pheasant Almond feather
(this one’s a touch on the big side for me but we can’t be that picky)

14. Stroke both sides of the feather towards the rear as you take a wrap and a half around the hook.

15. Tie off feather trim the tips
16. Using your left hand make a triangle to stroke back the collar and put a couple of wraps in front of them to angle them towards the rear.
17. Whip finish and apply Sally Henson’s to the wraps.

Stu Thompson

You can get a hold of him through the Warmfly.com website.
It's a custom blend of his and I'm not sure of all of what's in it
but it's about as buggy as it gets. He'll sell you a bag for $3. He lives in Winnipeg, Manitoba. If you fail to get a hold of him let me know and I'll send you his address to make an order. I think he can blend any color. I had him make me black, brown, tan, and olive. He actually uses the DDH leech pattern he developed for carp and cats in canada.

Ah, forget it.

Nice tie Josh. I appreciate you always taking time to SHARE how you do things. Teaching is obviously more than a day job for you.

I tied a version after seeing your tutorial in brown and in olive. I believe that will a fine smallie pattern on the French Broad Rv. when it warms up.

Hi guys and you to Josh. It's amazing what you can find when you have a free morning to look on the internet. I am the person responsible for getting Josh to tie his fly. My original pattern is pictured above. I developed this fly 10-11 years ago and has since landed 42 species of fish. Not all caught by me (wish they were) but this fly has represented itself quite well. Did I copy this from someone? Not that I know of. The technique I use has been around for years so this fly may have been tied before I started tying it. We all know there is numerous procedures to be used and it depends on how we use them.
I think the thing that sets this fly apart from others that are similar is the dubbing. These are my own blends and are based on 40+ years of observations. I use colors to make colors ie. my brown is not really brown but a combination of colors to produce the color brown. Add a bit of flash material and you have what I call DarkWater Dubbing. Of course the black fly above is black dubbing but the olive fly has 3 different colors in it plus the flash material. If you guys have any questions about it let me know.
Stu
