Watauga River Special (WRS) Step by Step

Watauga River Special (WRS) Step by Step

Hook: Daiichi 1220 #10
Bead: 1/8 Gold or Bigger
Lead: 7 wraps of .25
Thread: 8/0 Uni … if available use G.S.P 50 denier (it’s bullet proof)
Tail: Tan marabou lightly dyed black to imitate PT Marabou
(use PT Marabou if available)
Body: Tan DDH Leech Dubbing..Touch Dubbed…Teased with Velcro
Ribbing: Any Small to Medium Gage Wire (Wire Disapears in dubbing)
Collar: Pheasant Almond (Church Window) 1.5 turns stroke both sides of the feather to the rear while winding

1. Place the bead on the hook and mount in vice

2. 7 wraps of .25 lead shove into countersunk bead

3. Coat lead wraps with Sally Henson’s Hard as Nails

4. Start Thread wrap over lead wraps

5. Bring thread to the rear and tie in Marabou ~ hook length tail

6. Bind down marabou down the body to build up underbody

7. Return thread to rear and tie in wire ribbing

8. Touch dub a rope of DDH Dubbing

9. Build a tapered body with dubbing towards the front

10. Couter wrap wire rib to the front to help hold dubbing in place.

11. Tease out dubbing with Velcro and sweep fibers back along body

12. Whip finish here. If this fly tears up the collar will be the first to go
That way you can add a collar to a beat up fly for rejuvination.

13. Select and tie in Pheasant Almond feather
(this one’s a touch on the big side for me but we can’t be that picky)

14. Stroke both sides of the feather towards the rear as you take a wrap and a half around the hook.

15. Tie off feather trim the tips
16. Using your left hand make a triangle to stroke back the collar and put a couple of wraps in front of them to angle them towards the rear.
17. Whip finish and apply Sally Henson’s to the wraps.

Stu Thompson

You can get a hold of him through the Warmfly.com website.
It's a custom blend of his and I'm not sure of all of what's in it
but it's about as buggy as it gets. He'll sell you a bag for $3. He lives in Winnipeg, Manitoba. If you fail to get a hold of him let me know and I'll send you his address to make an order. I think he can blend any color. I had him make me black, brown, tan, and olive. He actually uses the DDH leech pattern he developed for carp and cats in canada.
