WEEK 91....This Week's Fly is a Stonefly Nymph

How about trying your hand at tying a buggy looking stonefly nymph this week? Orange_spokes' recently posted fly put the idea in my head.

Not going to have time to participate tonight but I will be watching this one closely. Watch out fellers windknotter ties a mean stoney. I stole his idea last winter and since then it has broken alot of mtn stream trout's hearts including a wild 17in brown.

Dang I wish I could get in on this one

Ive been cranking out some stones latley for nyphing deep pocket water holes and the high water we have had here latley. But Im at work now, get home at 2, get some sleep, off to the river early, and the back to work before I get home again. Maybe Ill just post some non-competitive pics at the end when I get some time on Wednesday (or rather early Thursday morning when I finally get back to the house). Looking forward to stealing some ideas here anyway.
Good ties so far guys

Take Care,
Riparian

Rip,
Jump in anytime you can pal, glad to have you.

Turkey Stone
Hook-#6 streamer, bent a little at 1/3 shank and well weighted with lead wire. Mash lead after wrapping to flatten profile.
Thread-6/0 black or larger
Tails-Paired wild turkey primary wing fibers from long side of feathers
Abdomen-Wild turkey tail slips tied in by tips and wrapped to build a tapered body. After wrapping the first slip, just tie down the uneven butts then tie in another slips tips atop them, wrap and so on.
Rib-Brown medium vinyl half round
Carapice-Wild turkey tail slip
Thorax-Buggy brown dubbing wrapped in a dubbing loop
Legs-Webby black saddle hackle palmered and clipped top and bottom.
Antennae-Paired wild turkey primary wing fibers from long side of feathers tied in then later doubled back.
Head-Turkey tail slip butts from carapice turned back, tied off and trimmed. Saturate entire abdomen with head cement to finish.

Fairly simple tie but I seldom have two that turn out the same. Luckily the fish don't seem to care.

Vinyl Rib Stone

I'm giving the fly tying contest a try this week, after finally fixing a problem with the camera...

Vinyl Rib Stone

Hook: any curved shanked hook.
Thread: 6/0 Brown
Tail: Brown goose biot
Body: Brown vinyl rib (I use a layer of brown dubbing under the vinyl rib to build up the body)
Thorax: Gray ostrich herl
Legs: Brown goose biot (bent to shape)
Wingcase: 2mm brown foam

I add lead and a gold beadhead to aid in siking the fly to the bottom of the river.
