Rib Country BBQ in Murphy, NC is the best - but I may be a little less than unbiased on this subject.

Wausau does have one claim to fame in barbeque and that is Larry Raymond. He originated Sweet Baby Rays barbeque sauce that you can buy just about everywhere. Larry was the executive chef of the Wausau Club, a membership only club when he sold Sweet Baby Rays to Kraft Foods. He then opened his own restuarant, but health problems forced him to close. He made great ribs at both restaurants.

Another food company that was founded in our area is Tombstone Pizza which was also bought by Kraft Foods. It was started when the Tombstone Tap, a bar in Medford, Wisconsin started serving pizza. One of the owners broke his leg, and while recovering he experimented with various pizza recipes and the rest is history.

It depends on what type of BBQ

For a Brontosaurus rib (Kansas City Rib) - Mac's Speed Shop in Charlotte is hard to beat

For pulled BBQ I like Lancasters in Charlotte or Charlie's Sledgehammer in Blowing Rock

The Best BBQ around is this coming weekend....it's so good I'm missing the expo in Asheville for it! It's an annual BBQ at Mt Zion UMC. It's been going on annually for over 75 years and is slow cooked over Hickory coals. If you happen to be in that area on the first Saturday in Nov. that's the place to be.

if anybody is in the Greensboro/Burlington area, Mt Hope Church is having their BBQ/Chicken Pie dinner this Sat night come on over and eat some killer food. May have to argue about whether the Asheville Church's is better....although I must admit I'm biased since Mt Hope uses my family's secret sauce mix

Three Pigs in Troutville near Roanoke Va is good. There are no trout in Troutville, but there are streams close.

Henry's Barbeque in simpsonville, sc. you can ride by at 4:00 in the morning and they are in there smoking meat. And the fixins aren't bad either. Best ever

Sweet Baby Ray's

I Love Sweet Baby Ray's! My boys will kill for slow-cooked beef ribs, rubbed, and then finished with Ray's Chipolte Honey Sauce.

For pulled pork BBQ in Charlotte, Boy Scout Troop 355 hickory smokes 10,000 pounds every year in mid January at Sharon United Methodist Church. It has received quite a bit of media attention over the years. My son joined the troop last year, so the neighbors all bought their "neighborly" pound so my scout could meet his sales quota. However, after tasting the goods, most all of them immediately called us for another delivery. Many have already pre-ordered 12 pounds (one pound a month) for 2010.
