Please, please... All of these ketchup-coated barbeque joints are cute, but come on.

I grew up in Western NC but I've got to agree with JoshuaI, that down east vinegar based bbq is hard to beat. Best bbq I ever ate was at an engagement party in Pikeville NC. A couple of older guys cooking a couple pigs out on the farm, with some really sweet tea. . .that was down right glorious. I know it wasn't a restraunt but it was the best bbq! We pulled it right off the pig!

I don't know about any good commercial BBQ places. But to me the best source of good BBQ has to be a small country church that has some experience under its belt. My home church in Mt. Ulla NC has what I believe to be the best BBQ i have ever eaten. As for sauce goes it has to be Vinagar based and pretty spicy. Sides are vinagar slaw and candied sweet potatoes. Almost 60 years of experience never hurts either.

Asuflyfisher is right. Some of the best barbeque (and Brunswick stew) around is made by rural churches to raise funds, so take advantage of this when you can.

Very true. I still make Brunswick Stew with a recipe from Oak Grove Moravian Church that's probably seventy years old. Best there is.

Now I know we're talking pig here. (Except for those guys from Texas.) But if I may expand the thread, if you're ever around the Statesville area, try Keaton's Barbecue. I didn't even know they sold any pork until I looked at their on-line menu. Chicken is what they're know for.

I wish I could find decent Q in SE Virginia. I've given up looking and just started cooking my own.

The best BBQ I've ever had was at Sweatman's in Holly Hill, SC. I love NC BBQ, both vingear and tomato based, but nothing, and I mean nothing beats South Carolina BBQ with the pork, mustard sauce, and hash over rice. Sweatman's is only open on Friday and Saturday and is one of those places that is open til they run out. Nothing fancy, they basically just have BBQ, bread, and hash and rice. At $10 for the buffet, it is in my humble opinion the best food value on the planet. For the record, I've only been able to finish two plates.
