You wanna go Backpackin in the smokies?

Sure why not. We have none of the right gear, heavy tents, backpacks so small they couldn't hold all of our textbooks in highschool and we smoke a pack a day. Sure lets go backpacking.

We do have flies, rods, reels and a general idea of how to catch some trout. Plus we share the same appreciation of eating beanie weenies within earshot of a little creek located in the closest thing you could call "wilderness" in North Carolina.

We managed to forget our trail map, tentstakes and a can opener.

We did find the campsite, used rope to hold our tent up and found rocks that could be hit with bigger rocks in order to open cans.

Cant think of a better way to spend a few days

where we went

some of our makeshift gear (thats a trashbag full of stuff that needs waterproofing)

cool little creek

made a wrong turn and ended up here

we finally found camp and got to do some fishing. Wasn't bad wasn't fantastic but we caught fish and some reaching impressive sizes. Left the camera in camp for the most part.

But caught some of these

and some of these

lost some trouts outta here

no better way to kill time

we'll definately be headin in again. hopefully better prepared next time

Got to be careful which way you go when you come out of the tunnel, but I guess you know that now. Beautiful stream, one of my favorites in the Park. Glad you had fun and caught some fish.

Doesn't LMP still rent backpacks? Nice job. I was just telling Blaze that I had hiked in there on dayhikes but never took a rod. DUH! Did take that left there for an overnighter in Dec with my wife. BRRRRR! My water filter froze up.

I am looking at heading up to the GSNP Aug 22-24 for my first time. All I know is what I have read from this webpage. Come prepared sound like a must!

A few questions:

Will the fishing be good?

What stream will be good to hit?

Is anyone going that would like a tagalong?

Any advice?

Flynut, I saw your post and I'm headed up to Bryson City and and trying my hand at trout for the first time on August 14th-16th. I'm kind of wondering the same things you are. I hear that the water is gonna be low though.

So, my questions are:

What streams are normally crowded?

Do the tributaries of the larger streams hold many fish?

What are some good patterns for the Smokies?

Any places I should be sure to checkout?

I know that T.E. Shuler is a guide from Bryson City, but does he have a fly shop I can check out or does anyone know of any good ones in the area?

Also, does anyone know where i can find a map that has the names of all the smaller streams in the park instead of just the more popular/larger ones?

If your unwilling to name some places because of trout conservation I understand.

Feel free to PM me and Thanks a ton for the help.

Nice job. The lake levels look great. Kind of surprising actually. I am all kinds of busy, but plan on getting over that direction in September.

looks like a good time. Walking through that tunnel gets a little eerie as it is one big tunnel. Headlamp was buried in the pack so I didn't use it.

We headed the other way from the lake, but we had a confusing moments back there too. It got to be sorta brutal at times.

Glad to see you got out there, and that the fish were still out too.

Thanks for sharing.
